SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A big power outage in Springfield was caused by a very small animal Monday morning.

Priscilla Ress, spokesperson for Eversource Energy, told 22News that a squirrel got into some equipment, damaging a wire at around 5:40 A.M. This caused about 125 customers in Springfield’s Sixteen Acres neighborhood to lose power.

Eversource had to cut power to hundreds more customers in order to safely make repairs, bringing the total number of customers without power to 541.

Electricity was restored for everyone in about an hour and a half’s time.
