The State Senate passed a consumer protection bill Wednesday to prevent unfair student lending practices.

The bill was filed by State Senator Eric Lesser. It establishes a student loan bill of rights and protects student loan borrowers from unfair, predatory, and deceptive practices of student lending and loan servicing companies.

Similar bills have passed in Connecticut, Washington, and Illinois and have been filed in a dozen of other states.

Data collected by the Institute for College Access and Success found that Massachusetts students have the 11th highest average student debt in the nation.
