Department of Public Health hands over regulation of medical marijuana in Massachusetts

Boston Statehouse

Patients might not see any changes during their next trip to the dispensary, but the status of the state’s medical marijuana industry has definitely changed.

The Department of Public Health has overseen medical marijuana since it launched in 2014, but now they’re handing control over to the CCC.

DPH Commissioner Monica Bharel assured medical marijuana patients that they will not be affected by the change. The CCC will now oversee 57,000 medical marijuana patients and more than 7,000 personal caregivers.

Commission Chairman Steven Hoffman thanked Commissioner Bharel for her leadership in the medical cannabis industry. He also welcomed 22 new staffers employed by DPH who will shift with the program and become employees of the CCC.

Hoffman said under the CCC’s leadership, he hopes to continue to provide top-notch service for medical patients all across Massachusetts.
