School transportation commission aiming to cut travel times for students

Boston Statehouse

Pittsfield State Senator Adam Hinds led the School Transportation Commission’s first meeting, which heard testimony about the problems students face trying to get to school.

“We’re trying to take a deep dive and say how can we do better on our transportation across the board including special education transportation, vocational transportation and beyond,” Senator Hinds said.

Senator Hinds has been a champion of school transportation issues.

Just last month he met with students from the Mowhawk Regional School District to discuss ways to cut students’  travel time to and from school.

Some students complained that they end up on the bus for up to 2 hours each way.

During this legislative session,  The commission will be looking into the financial aspects of school transportation and where funding needs to be allocated to fix existing issues.

Senator Hinds said his colleagues in the legislature have supported his push to increase funding for rural school transportation this session.
