State Senate votes in favor of bill that bans conversion therapy

Boston Statehouse

Senator Eric Lesser and the State Senate voted in favor of a bill Thursday that bans conversion therapy in Massachusetts.

The bill prevents licensed mental health professionals from using practices to change sexual orientation and gender identity.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics minors subjected to conversion therapy experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.

The Senate will now negotiate a final version of the bill with the House–which passed a slightly different version of the bill this month.

A final bill will be sent to the governor’s desk.
