State Representative John Velis has returned home from a six month deployment to Afghanistan.  Velis is a major in the U-S Army Reserves. Velis, a Democrat from Westfield, is the state representative for the 4th Hampden District.

Velis served as part of a peace and reconciliation team. The mission brought him to the cities of Kabul and Bagram, and he also spent time in Qatar.

Velis told 22News that he’s happy to be home and ready to get back to work at the statehouse. He says that one of the lessons he’s learned from Afghanistan is the need for the people of our country to be more unified.

Velis also says he believes the mission in Afghanistan is a good cause and important to protection against terrorism in the region.This was his second tour in Afghanistan. He also has been deployed to South Korea.
