SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Springfield grand jury has returned a murder indictment against a 26 year-old man in a nearly three year-old murder case.

Monday, Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced the charges against Sherad Therrien in the killing of 22 year-old John Alexander.

In the early morning hours of September 28, 2013, Alexander was found near 28 Westminster Street in Springfield, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance, where he died.

In a statement sent to 22News, Gulluni thanked investigators for continuing to pursue this case, which had remained unsolved for years. “I would like to commend both the Springfield Police Department as well as Assistant District Attorney Karen Bell, who is a member of the office’s Murder and Major Crimes Unit, for never giving up on this cold case. With indictments from the grand jury in hand, my office will now prosecute this case with vigor and an eye to justice for the victim and his family.”

Therrien is being charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition without an FID Card.

Therrien is currently in federal custody, after being found guilty of gun and drug charges last year. He also has a conviction on his record for assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm without a license, in connection with an incident in Springfield in May of 2010.
