Utility to miss deadline for restoring gas after explosions

The utility involved in a series of natural gas explosions and fires in three Massachusetts communities last month says it will not meet its original Nov. 19 deadline for restoring gas service to all its customers.

Columbia Gas said Friday it now expects to complete restoration between Dec. 2 and Dec. 16, but officials say they expect most residents and businesses to have heat and hot water before that time.

Thousands of customers in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover have been without gas service since the Sept. 13 incident that killed one person and injured 25 others. Investigators blamed over pressurization of gas lines.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker calls the recovery “painful, frustrating and inconvenient.”
With temperatures falling, he’s urging residents to consider taking advantage of temporary housing being offered in trailers, apartments and hotels.
