SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield arson investigators are looking into what caused the cab of a tractor trailer to burst into flames Thursday night.
Springfield Fire District Chief Vincent Neffinger told 22News the driver of the tractor trailer was driving eastbound on I-291 in Springfield when he noticed smoke coming from his cab. The driver got off I-291 at Exit 5B, onto Page Boulevard, when the cab burst into flames.
The driver was able to jump out of the cab and was not harmed, Chief Neffinger said. However, the cab of the tractor trailer was seriously damaged by the flames.
Neffinger added that the tractor was carrying liquid sugar, which is not hazardous. Also, the fuel tank was still intact, so that wasn’t an issue.
When 22News got there, two fire trucks and two ambulances were there. Page Boulevard had been blocked off from the exit to Cadwell Drive, while the firefighters cleared the area. The road was slowly reopened while the firefighters worked to get the trailer towed away.
