Heavier traffic expected locally as MGM Springfield, Big E draws thousands

With MGM Springfield opening last month and the Big E starting up Friday, tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands more people are entering our area every day.

MGM Springfield said this week their attendance numbers have exceeded expectations, with 25,000 daily visitors during the week, and 50,000 during the weekend.

At the Big E, it isn’t uncommon for the fair to see more than 100,000 visitors in a day.

The launch of the CT Rail Hartford Line this summer, which more than doubled the number of trips between Hartford, New Haven and Springfield every day, visitors will for the first time have the option to ride the train and take a shuttle to the Big E.

One Feeding Hills resident told 22News the increase in traffic has already begun.

“I live in Feeding Hills, and it took me like seventeen minutes to get from there to down here near central Chevrolet,” said Roberto Cortez. “It clears out eventually, you just have to be patient. You can’t be in a rush.”

People coming to the Big E are encouraged to have a plan, the parking lot on the property can hold 8,500 cars, but businesses and residents nearby do offer up spaces for a price.

The Big E set a record for attendance last year.

It runs now through September 30.
