There is another rehabilitation project in the future for Interstate 91 through Springfield, but not anytime soon.
MassDOT hosted the final public meeting on the I-91 Viaduct study, which includes the highway from just north of 291 to the Connecticut line.
While the deck replacement project on the elevated section of I-91 is all but complete, It is only a temporary measure.
Over the next 10 to 15 years, transportation officials will decide the next viaduct rehabilitation project, which will include a special focus on the Longmeadow curve.
“We wanna minimize the number of crashes and serious injuries and fatal injuries as much as we possibly can, and the Longmeadow curve time and time again came up as the area where these incidents were occurring,” Michael Clark, a transportation planner, told 22News.
Potential changes to the Longmeadow curve may include rotaries or roundabouts that would allow for safe access from Longmeadow to the South End Bridge.
Clark said the future viaduct could be similar to what exists, an even higher viaduct, or something below ground level.
