Lack of a highway sign on Route 116 in Chicopee has been confusing local as well as out-of-state drivers.
MassDOT said they will install a new sign on Route 116 southbound to help notify drivers of the I-391 South on-ramp.
MassDOT never installed one of those large green highway signs to alert drivers on Route 116 South in Chicopee of the 391 South on-ramp.
Additionally, drivers are still having a tough time getting used to the state’s re-configuration of Route 116.
“A lot of people are driving over the bicycle lanes and they think it’s still a lane,” said Eric Dumas of Chicopee. “And then they are backing out of the wrong ramp. It’s causing a lot of confusion to be honest.”
There is a small green sign on Route 116 South that warns drivers that the I-391 South on-ramp is coming up in one thousand feet.
But there’s no larger sign close to the on-ramp like there is on the other side of Route 116.
MassDOT never installed a green I-391 South on-ramp sign on Route 116 southbound in Chicopee. Drivers told us that these signs are especially helpful for people not familiar with the area.
“I’ve definitely missed the exit a few times without a sign indicating that it’s heading towards Springfield,” said Keno White of Chicopee. “Never mind coming in for holiday travel, and not being from this area, and not knowing where they are going it can be quite confusing.”
MassDOT said they will install a new 5ft-by-5ft I-391 South sign on 116 South, later this month.
MassDOT said they are also planning to install a larger I-391 South sign on Route 116 South in a future project, that will include the replacement of all signs along the I-391 corridor.
