A massive water main break is dumping thousands of gallons of water near the Union Street extension Thursday afternoon.
A 22News crew saw flooding in the industrial area behind the Big Y on Memorial Avenue. As of 11:40 p.m. Thursday, police say the estimated time to complete the work is still unknown.
West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt told 22News the break is affecting water pressure in parts of town, especially in the area of the break.
“Tons of infrastructure that’s gotta be fixed,” said Mayor Reichelt. “And this really is an example of aging infrastructure, and the need to do more leak detection and make sure everything gets fixed because these things happen more and more often.”
Crews from the Department of Public Works are at the location of the water main break.
Reichelt said the repair crews hope to have the situation resolved Thursday night.
He said water service should be restored to any residential homes.
