A heavily traveled bridge over I-291 in Springfield will stay closed for as long as one month.
According to MassDOT, crews have shut down the northbound side of the bridge near Exit 4 eastbound to I-291 due to an issue with the concrete bridge deck.
The bridge was initially closed to traffic Saturday due to maintenance work, but MassDOT closed the bridge Sunday due to the issue.
Detour routes have been put in place, but drivers are being asked to avoid the area if possible. MassDOT contractors will begin work on Wednesday and are expected to work for the next two to four weeks.
The southbound side of the bridge is still open to drivers.
