Orchard St. in Northampton closed for part of the day while trees are planted

Orchard Street residents came together to beautify Northampton by planting more than a dozen trees.

The program is part of the city’s larger plan to re-forest Northampton. In 2016, it identified over 2,000 potential tree planting sites including Orchard Street.

Between the hours of 7 a.m. Saturday morning until 1 p.m. Northampton residents and friends of Orchard Street planted 15 public shade trees along their street.

The city is launching the annual program to re-tree Northampton’s neighborhoods.

The new program encourages Northampton neighborhoods to gather volunteer support and complete an online application.

If selected, the neighborhood will receive a fall “Planting Day,” which includes free trees and borrowed planting tools.
