A previously announced closure of I-91 North at Exit 3 Friday night has been canceled, MassDOT says.
Instead, MassDOT will shut down I-91 South at Exit 7 and Exit 1A from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday for construction.
The I-91 South on-ramp from Birnie Avenue and I-91 Southbound on-ramp from Hall of Fame Avenue will also be closed.
MassDOT previously scheduled an overnight closure of I-91 North at Exit 3 but was canceled because of another construction project.
However, overnight closures of I-91 North at Exit 3 on June 24 to June 29 will continue as scheduled.
Signs will be in place indicating the following detour routes for Friday night:
During the Exit 1A Closure:
To reach I-91 South from I-291 West/Route 20 West: Take Exit 2B on I-291 West and follow signs for Dwight Street. Turn left on Dwight Street, then turn right on State Street. Turn left on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue, and bear left after crossing Union Street, to merge onto I-91 South.
During the I-91 South Closure:
To continue to I-91 South: Take Exit 7 (to Downtown Springfield) for West Columbus Avenue/Memorial Bridge. Continue on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue for approximately 1.5 miles to the I-91 South on-ramp prior to the South End Bridge.
To access I-91 South from West Columbus Avenue/Birnie Avenue:
Merge onto West Columbus Avenue and continue south onto East Columbus Avenue through the rail underpass. Bear right onto West Columbus Avenue behind the I-91 North Garage. Continue onto Hall of Fame Avenue and take the I-91 South on-ramp prior to the South End Bridge.
For downtown destinations:
Take Exit 7 (to Downtown Springfield) and merge onto West Columbus Avenue. Continue to destinations in the downtown area.
Drivers are advised to plan for additional travel time and follow the reduced speed limit through the areas mentioned above.
