Overnight closures for I-91 North and South in Springfield Wednesday, Thursday

Overnight closures have been scheduled for I-91 north and southbound in Springfield for Wednesday and Thursday, according to MassDOT.

The state’s Transportation Department said the overnight closures in Springfield, along with ramp closures are to allow crews to safely and effectively conduct construction operations.

Drivers told 22News they are frustrated. 

“You want to be patient about it but there are different ways to work I-91,” said Raul Montes of Springfield.

MassDOT officials are asking people to take it slow and allow yourself some extra time if you plan to drive through the area.

The full list of impacts will be as follows:

From approximately 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 8, through 5:30 a.m., Thursday, August 9:

  • All traffic on I-91 northbound will be detoured off of the highway at Exit 3. Travelers may then re-enter I-91 northbound at Exit 6.
  • All traffic on I-91 southbound will be detoured off of the highway at Exit 6. Travelers may then re-enter I-91 southbound at Exit 3.

From approximately 7 p.m., Thursday, August 9, through 5:30 a.m., Friday, August 10:

  • All traffic on I-91 northbound will be detoured off of the highway at Exit 3. Travelers may then re-enter I-91 northbound at Exit 6.
  • All traffic on I-91 southbound will be detoured off of the highway at Exit 7. Travelers may then re-enter I-91 southbound at Exit 3.
  • Exit 1A from I-291 westbound to I-91 southbound will be closed. Travelers may utilize Exit 2B on I-291 westbound, and then Dwight Street, State Street, West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue before merging onto I-91 southbound.
  • The Birnie Avenue/West Columbus Avenue on-ramp to I-91 southbound will be closed. Travelers may utilize West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue to merge onto I-91 southbound.
