WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A portion of Piper Road will be closed Thursday evening.

Piper Road will be closed from the West Springfield High School to Hale Street for a Road Assessment Study between 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Thursday evening.

West Springfield Police are asking drivers to find an alternative route during the road closures.

Residents have been concerned about the safety on Piper road, especially after a deadly pedestrian accident that claimed a woman’s life last Tuesday while she was walking her dog.

22News reached out to West Springfield Mayor Reichelt in regards to improvements for the city. “The council approved in this year’s Capital Plan funds to design crosswalk improvements and a sidewalk extension at Monastery and Piper,” he said.

Some improvements will be:

  • Adding curb extensions with rapid flashing lights
  • Adding additional crosswalks between Monastery Ave and Morgan Street
  • Adding a variety of school zone lights and speed signs
