Road closures, traffic delays expected for MGM Springfield opening day

We are expecting traffic delays in downtown Springfield Friday morning. MGM is expecting thousands of cars in the city for the resort casino’s opening day.

With all the excitement surrounding the MGM Casino grand opening, you can expect the streets in downtown will be filled with cars, buses and shuttles. If you’re planning to be here, MGM is recommending you leave early.

In addition to the increased volume of traffic, several roadways will be closed downtown because of a procession down Main Street that starts at 10:30 a.m. This will shut down:

  • Main St. from Court St. to Union St.
  • State St. from MGM Way to Dwight St.
  • Union St. from Main St. to East Columbus Ave.
  • Willow St. from State St. to Union St.
  • Stockbridge St. from Main St. to Willow St.
  • Park St. from Main St. to Willow St. (Local traffic will be allowed to access apartments)
  • Cross St. from Main St. to Willow St. will be closed until Sunday

The closures will begin at 4 Friday morning and last until about 2 p.m. Finding a parking space won’t be easy on opening day, even with the 3,400 space parking garage. Because of all the expected opening day traffic, one Springfield resident is holding off.

“Well, I plan on going sometime soon, just not tomorrow,” said Christian Vargas of Springfield. “Tomorrow is going to be too crowded and bombarded. Hopefully, within this month, everything settles, and I’ll give it a tray and try my luck at the casino.”

According to MassDOT, Exit 6 on Interstate 91 northbound and southbound will also be closed Friday at 6:00 A.M., and re-open at 4:00 P.M. Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh told 22News that the closures are for public safety reasons; to keep the traffic from backing-up on I-91.

MGM recommends visitors board “The Loop,” the new public transportation service originating from Union Station.

“I just feel like where there’s a will there is a way,” said Loretta Grant of Springfield. “When I come out to the casino, I’m not driving, I’ll walk from my house.”

If you want to beat the traffic that will be in downtown on opening day, starting Friday at 6 a.m., you can take a shuttle from here at The Big E fairgrounds that will take you to Court Street in Springfield.

A shuttle will leave Gate 9 every five to 10 minutes. They will run until the last car leaves the lot on Friday night.
