Road work zone signs leaving some drivers confused in Springfield

Traffic

Depending on the time of day you drive on Interstate 91, you may notice road signs that say “road work ahead” but don’t lead to any road work.

MassDOT spokesman Patrick Marvin told 22News that crews are continuing to resurface I-91 North and South in the Springfield area.

He said roadway signage and messaging is required to be placed at work zones at all times while a project is ongoing.

Springfield resident Reyes Pitters said he’s used to seeing the sings but understands how it could be confusing for someone not from the area. “You have to be careful and watch out because some of the signs can be misleading and you have to really take your time.”

Marvin told 22News that a good amount of construction takes place overnight and that the remaining paving work on the highway is expected to be completed this week.
