Snow, extreme cold causing slippery road conditions

Traffic

The extreme cold weather Monday morning means all the snow and sleet we saw Sunday is freezing up, which is causing some slick conditions on the roads.

The highways Monday morning were in good condition, they were cleared, dry and you can tell they had been treated. But on the back and side roads in Chicopee, it’s another story.

The flash freeze that followed this weekend’s storm turned any leftover snow on the ground into ice.

It’s important to warm up and clear off the car this morning before heading out.

And a head’s up, when it’s this bitterly cold out, regular salt doesn’t work on the roads. DPW crews are likely to use a different kind of salt on roads, but if you are using regular rock salt on your sidewalks or driveways at home,  the leftover ice and snow won’t melt.

So, on these side streets that haven’t been cleared off yet, just take it slow and leave some extra room between you and the car in front of you.
