PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) – A stretch of railroad track in Palmer is closed, after two train cars derailed.

Palmer Police Chief John Janulewicz told 22News that the cars have been derailed since 5:30 Wednesday evening. The incident happened just north of the Massachusetts Turnpike underpass, right before where the tracks cross Route 181.

Crews from the Massachusetts Central Railroad are bringing in equipment to move the train cars back into alignment.

The chief said it’s not clear what caused the derailment, but it hasn’t interfered with any traffic. He estimated that the trains only travel at about 15 MPH through the area.
