This year’s Valley Press Club scholarships will have a special meaning to 22News. 22News is sponsoring one of the scholarships in the name of a colleague we lost last year.
West Springfield High School graduate Hailey MacDonald got the grand tour of 22News in Chicopee this Friday.
Hailey is the winner of the 2018 Valley Press Club Scholarship sponsored by 22News, given in the name of our late friend and Colleague Mark Wiernasz. We lost Mark last July to a sudden illness, after he had worked as a key figure here at 22News for more than forty years.
Hailey got to see what goes into putting a news cast on the air, meeting Rich Tettemer on the set, and seeing all the people and technology behind the news cast.
Hailey is planning a career in Journalism, and is will start her formal education this Fall at Western New England University. She said she’s always enjoyed writing and telling stories, creating a newsletter for the Town of West Springfield.
“So I’m writing one news article per week. Last week, I wrote about the charter schools, and the difference between public, private and charter schools because we are getting a charter school in West Springfield.”
Hailey is no stranger to television news, hosting her own series that aired on the local access station in West Springfield. She’ll hit the ground running when she majors in Journalism at Western New England University.
