AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Mayor Sarno will be standing in solidarity with local veterans at Hampshire College Sunday to protest the schools decision not to fly the American flag.
Students who were upset of over the election of Donald Trump lowered the main flag flown at the center of Hampshire College campus.
After the flag was lowered to half staff on November 9th, the flag was burned on the 10th, an incident that Hampshire College President Jonathon Lash told 22News is still being investigated.
Following the day the flag was replaced by administrators in honor of veterans day, but it was again lowered to half staff following a vote taken among the board of trustees. Lash announced Friday the flag was indefinitely removed to allow for discussion at the college.
In response, local veterans plan to line the streets on Sunday outside Hampshire College holding hundreds of U.S. flags. Veterans of Foreign war post 754 will meet outside the colleges west street entrance at 1pm for a peaceful demonstration of freedom.
