Veterans Park of Heroes returns to West Springfield’s Town Common

Veterans Voices

West Springfield’s Veterans Park of Heroes is back again for the third consecutive year.

West Springfield Lions Club volunteers set up more than 650 United States flags Friday at the West Springfield Town Common.

Each flag can be purchased for $30 to honor any veteran. All the money raised will help pay for scholarships for children whose parents are veterans.

“We wouldn’t be able to do what we are doing here and hang these flags if it wasn’t for them,” said John Ladue, West Springfield Lions Club chairman. “So it’s a good way to honor our veterans and to pay it forward to do something nice for them and their families.”

Ladue said they had to cancel their Veterans Park of Heroes opening ceremony scheduled for Saturday due to the rain in the forecast.

The veterans flags will remain on the Common through November 25.
