CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Westover Air Reserve Base will open its gates to the public this weekend (July 14-15) for the 2018 Great New England Air Show.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are headlining the show, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to western Massachusetts.
Here’s everything you need to know before heading to the base:
The public will be able to access the base via five gates beginning at 8:00 AM. These gates are located on Westover Road, James Street, Goodwin Street, and Padgett Street, and South Street (Granby, MA).
The public is advised to get to the base early, but not before 8:00 AM. There will be security checks and heavy traffic.

Free parking will be available on Westover Air Reserve Base. Courtesy shuttle buses to the flight line will be provided from the most distant parking areas. All other attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk to the flight line from their parking spot.
Schedule of events
- 8AM: Gates open to the public
- 9AM: Static aircraft displays open
- 11AM: Flying demonstrations begin
- Late afternoon: U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds perform

Who is performing? What aircraft will be on display?
Performances include: The USAF Thunderbirds, the GEICO Skytypers, various World II Warbirds, a C-5, Rob Holland, a KC-135, and a C-17
Static displays include: B-52, A-10, F-35, F-16, F-15, one of Westover’s C-5M, KC-10, KC-135, AC-130, T-1, T-6, T-45, UH-60, AH-64, LUH-72, UH-1, U-28, E-2, E-6B, C-2, EA-18, P-8, HH-60 Pave Hawk, and a variety of World War II-era aircraft.
As a general rule, do not bring anything to Westover Air Reserve Base that you would not bring on an airplane.
- No medical or recreational marijuana (federal installation)
- No loose ice
- No coolers (only coolers for medicine/baby formula are allowed)
- No cans
- No Glass
- No Alcohol
- No pets (except service animals)
- No weapons of any kind (to include pepper spray, pocket knives and other self-defense items)
- No Tents
- No Awnings
- No cooking equipment
- No Roller Blades, Skate Boards, Razor Scooters, Bicycles
What can I bring?
All carry-in items are subject to search. Approved items include:
Small purses, fanny packs, diaper bags
- Cameras, camera bags
- Baby strollers
- Small lawn chairs (no full-body lounge chairs)
- Small umbrellas
What can I buy there?
The show will go on rain or shine. Rain/cloudy weather could impact flying demonstrations.
