WILBRAHAM Nass. (WWLP) – A western Massachusetts assisted living facility is getting a new flag pole, after a disabled veteran stood outside for 10 hours holding a flag on Memorial Day.

The flag pole outside Wingate of Wilbraham was knocked down last winter. Army Specialist Darren Swallow took it upon himself to stand outside the facility holding a flag, in tribute to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Wingate Administrator Darryl Lecours told 22News the facility has had a new pole on order for a while. He expects it to arrive in a few weeks. Their flag is currently hanging in the lobby.

Wingate is looking at other locations on the grounds, so the flag pole isn’t hit again
