CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts awoke Saturday morning to bone chilling cold that was one for the record books.
Residents are shivering through icy, bitter, jaw clenching cold. The arctic air is chilly enough to make the single digits look good.
Sue Harnois of Chicopee said, “I’m ready to move down to California or the Mediterranean somewhere. Some place where it’s warm, and stays warm all of the time.”
Subzero temperatures have encompassed nearly every surface with a thick coating of ice and snow, from the Connecticut River to roofs, sidewalks, and gutters. Temperatures dipped to 19 degrees below zero on Saturday, making it the coldest day of the winter so far. That’s cold enough that if you were to crack an egg in your driveway, it would freeze within minutes.Weather: Forecast Discussion
Although it’s probably safe to say it’s warmer indoors, for some residents, simply turning on the heat has become a challenge. Crystal Detres of Springfield said, “We just try and keep warm the best way that we can. Sometimes we have to leave the oven on and leave it open just so it can get warm in the house. I’m sick of winter, I really am, and I’m sick of the snow.”
Jerry Rudolph from Connecticut said, “Horrible. I have severe arthritis, so getting around is just absolute torture. The cane slips on the ice.”
Warmer temperatures are in the forecast, which means we might finally hear the sounds of melting ice.
