Catholic Abuse: Parishioners push back

World

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, The Archbishop of Washington, D.C., was publicly scolded at mass Sunday as he addressed the sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic church.

The cardinal has been named in a report which says he worked to cover up the actions of pedophile priests.

Wuerl was appealing to worshippers to pray for Pope Francis when a parishioner shouted “Shame on you!” and walked out.

Another, Mary Challinor, turned her back on Cardinal Wuerl.

“I am celebrating mass, but I don’t agree with what’s being said,” Challinor said afterward.

While Wuerl has not been accused of abuse, he was named in a Pennsylvania grand jury report which says that while he was Bishop of Pittsburgh he allowed child molesting clergy to be moved or reinstated.

Critics say the abuse and similar errors in judgment have led to a crisis in the church.
