Joe Teixera, 56, leaves behind four children, four grandchildren and his wife of 31 years. His daughter, Cassandra Nunes, said her father had a big personality, sense of humor and wit.
“We’re completely shattered,” she said in a telephone interview Friday.
Teixera was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after something reportedly fell on the excavator he was operating at the constriction site for the new Wynn Boston Harbor Casino in Everett. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Nunes said her father had been a machine operator for 35 years and safety was his top priority. She said he was passionate about his work and had been teaching his 10-year-old granddaughter about his career.
“He loved it,” Nunes said. “It wasn’t just work. He loved every second of it, it was like his hobby.”
Wynn and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are now investigating. There have been three previous incidents at the casino construction site since December that left workers hurt, according to an OSHA spokesman.
A Wynn spokesman released a statement about the incident:
“It is with tremendous sadness that we learn of the loss of long-time J. Derenzo Co. employee and friend, Joe Teixeira resulting from injuries sustained at the Wynn Boston jobsite. Our deepest-felt thoughts and prayers are with Joe’s family, friends and co-workers, as well as everyone impacted by this incident. We offer our condolences and support in the aftermath of this tragic event.”
Nunes said her family is grateful for the outpouring of support they’ve received from the community.
She said she’s holding on to the happy memories she had with her father, but will miss the little things the most.
“His hugs. His smile. Seeing him with my mom,” Nunes said. “Just his presence.”
