(NBC News) – Scientists with the National Science Foundation revealed Wednesday the first-ever images of a black hole.
Black holes are the incredibly dense remnants of collapsed stars, with gravitational forces so powerful that no matter or even light can escape once it gets too close.
Scientists used the Event Horizon telescope consortium to capture a silhouette of the black hole which shows a dark patch surrounded by a bright ring of orange-red light.
The black hole is located 55 million light years from Earth and has a mass that is 6.5 billion times more than the sun.
The Event Horizon telescope is an array of eight ground-based radio telescopes spanning the globe, specifically created for the purpose of capturing these images.
