ICE detains man driving pregnant wife to hospital in California

A California woman is demanding answers after she says federal immigration authorities detained her husband as she was trying to take her to the hospital to give birth.

Maria Del Carmen Venegas holding back the tears.

She says she’s doing bad at this moment and that’s when you most need your husband.

The mother of five just gave birth two days ago, the same day her husband, Joel Arrona, was detained by ICE agents.

It was Wednesday afternoon.

Venegas was on the way to the hospital with her husband.

She was heading there for a pre-planned c-section.

Surveillance video shows them at the gas station when two cars surrounded her vehicle.

She says the were ICE agents.

She says they asked her for her ID, so she got her ID and gave it to them and then they asked about her husband’s ID.

She says he doesn’t have his but we live pretty close and we can get it if you need it.

She says that’s when the agents had him step out of the vehicle to check for weapons.

When he got out, they put him into custody.

You could see Venegas was hysterical and had no idea what was going on.

She says her husband has no criminal history and that police never stopped him. He’s never had a ticket.

Venegas was forced to drive herself to the hospital, shortly after she gave birth to her baby boy.

While he’s physically ok, this mother is living a nightmare.

She says my husband needs to be here, he had to wait for so long and someone just took him away.

In a statement, ICE says Arrona is a Mexican citizen living illegally in the U.S.

A Go-Fund-Me account has been set up to raise money for the Arrona’s familiy.

It’s already raised more than $1,000 dollars.
