Authorities are investigating after a child was found wandering inside a J.C. Penney’s store early Friday morning in Symmes Township, Ohio.
Deputies responded to calls about a 3-year-old boy who was by himself inside the department store.
Investigators said the child’s mother came to the Sheriff’s Office around 9 a.m., after being notified by friends and family that a photo of the child had been shared on social media.
Sheriff Jim Neil said the mother and several other adults told deputies they were shopping along with their children Wednesday night before splitting up into two separate cars to leave the store.
The family said each group believed the other had Quincy in their car due to “incomplete arrangements” after agreeing to let some of the kids spend the night with their great-grandmother and grandmother.
The great-grandmother and grandmother said they thought the mother and aunt had Quincy since he became “fussy while shopping.”
The child is currently being assessed by Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services. The criminal investigation is ongoing but no charges have been filed at this time.
