(WPRI) — A young seal that was rescued back in May was released back into the ocean Thursday morning.

Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program admitted Barnes, a two week old seal, in May after he was found abandoned. The seal is named in honor of former UConn Husky and 2018 World Series champion Matt Barnes, a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

Barnes received around the clock care from the program’s staff, including formula feeds every three hours, weekly exams and weight tracking.

After being admitted at only 18 pounds, Barnes was released weighing 53 pounds after successfully transitioning from formula to fish.

Barnes was released at Shutters Beach in Charlestown.
