Police Officer Dustin Miles was told his K-9 partner, Alex, was to be used as a tool and not looked at as a pet. But, once he found out Alex was going to need his leg removed after a severe injury, he took the pup as his own – regardless of any setbacks for him in his career.
Miles noticed Alex was limping one morning when the two were playing fetch before reporting to duty on the Rock Island, Illinois police force.
“I mean he’s a pretty strong dog so for him to not put any weight on a leg – I knew it was something pretty serious,” said Officer Miles. “Just like every morning, just playing fetch. I think he tried to stop too fast after chasing the ball and his right front paw just gave out.”
Officer Miles quickly realized the severity of the injury, especially after multiple doctors gave him the same options.
“It would be more stress for the dog to fix it and if he reinjured it they’d have to amputate it,” said Officer Miles. “It was the better option to go ahead and get one surgery done and out of the way and let him enjoy the rest of his life as a pet.”
