(WPRI) — Police are trying to determine what caused the roof of a partially constructed building to collapse in Attleboro this afternoon.
According to the Attleboro Fire Department, the call came in around 5:30 p.m. with reports of a building collapse off of Route 1. When crews arrived on scene, they noticed the building was under construction.
Attleboro fire officials said no one was injured in the collapse. It’s unclear at this time what crews are building on the site, but the site used to be home to a Shell gas station.
Benjamin Baker had just finished eating dinner at a nearby restaurant when he heard the collapse.
A construction site in Attleboro collapses. This is right off of Route 1 by BJ’s. We’re working the details.
“I heard a clattering sound, it wasn’t a normal sound, I figured they were working on the gas station because it has been a few months since they’ve been working on it, and we drove by and noticed traffic and saw that the building had fallen over,” Baker recalled.
Baker said he was surprised to see that the roof had collapsed.
“If they were pretty close to doing the roof on it and now it is just a bunch of scrap wood, it’s crazy,” Baker said.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
Here’s another pic of the damage! Officials confirm there were no injuries.
