(NEWS10) – The Washington County teenager who pleaded guilty to killing his friend in Putnam last July was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on Friday.

Adrian Sawyer, 16, from Ticonderoga, admitted to killing 15-year-old Maverick Bowman during an argument. A machete was recovered from the scene.

Bowman’s mother spoke in Washington County Court Friday, saying that her 15-year-old son was killed just one week from his 16th birthday. She asked the judge to “please put [Sawyer} in prison for the rest of his life and never let him out.”

When the judge asked if Sawyer wished to make a statement, Sawyer responded with two words.

“I’m alright,” he said.
