Town in Louisiana bans Nike

People in Kenner, Louisiana are showing their support for Nike after the city’s mayor instituted a band on the brand.

Hundreds of people called on Mayor Ben Zahn to rescind the band at a rally in Susan Park Monday.

The protest comes after Zahn announced the ban in a memo, which states, “Under no circumstances will any Nike product or any product with the Nike logo be purchased for use or delivery at any City of Kenner Recreation Facility.”

The policy comes amid a wave of protest over Nike choosing former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the face of their ‘just do it’ campaign.

In a written statement Monday, Mayor Zahn said he applauds Nike’s message of inclusion and encouragement, but his decision to ban city booster clubs from purchasing Nike products was to protect taxpayer dollars.
