A Washington state patrol officer was killed during a police chase early Sunday morning.

Tragically, the patrolman was struck as he tried to set out spike strips by an officer from the town of Kent.

Both were responding to reports of shots fired at a local restaurant.

Vehicles were in pursuit of a red pickup truck.

“There was a report of shots fired, I believe near the Shari’s off of Meeker in Kent. Kent police responded and I believe a red truck was pointed out to them. A pursuit ensured. They came toward State Route 516 here and west westbound. At some point in time they turned around, were headed back this way. Kent police officer was deploying spike strips right out here and subsequently was struck and unfortunately killed.”

After striking the patrolman, the Kent officer crashed into three other cars at an intersection.

He is in the hospital with critical injuries.

The red truck crashed a short time later.

One suspect was arrested, but at least two others fled the scene.
