Athletes, parents, coaches learn about sports medicine at Baystate Health event

Baystate Health held a free sports medicine workshop in Holyoke Wednesday night.

Area athletes, parents, and coaches were invited to attend the “Halftime: Returning to Spring and Summer Sports” presentation.

Topics included nutrition, common sports injuries and their treatment.

22News spoke with Dr. Christopher Keroack who told us ways sports-related injuries could be prevented.

“Having the athlete be warmed up, understanding their skill set and having the right protective gear is going to be the real key component,” Keroack told 22News. “Also not doing too much, too soon, too heavy or too long.”

Although summer and spring sports were the focus of the discussion, this advice can be applied to sports played during all seasons.
