Cugini wins 2018 NEMA Lites Championship

Dan Cugini took down the 2018 NEMA Lites championship.

Cugini told 22News that the season was good.

” We didn’t have very low points at all. It was all pretty consistent throughout the whole year. We tried to put a car out on the track that was consistent. Went from the back to the front every week.” Said Cugini

Cugini clinched the 2018 NEMA Lites championship during Sunoco World Series weekend at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Cugini did not try to get wrapped up in the points in general. When Cugini got out on the track, it didn’t matter where he was in the point standings.  They wanted to get as much as they could out of the car and have a good time.

What made the championship special this year for Cugini and being a family team? It was being consistent at the track along with working at the shop, having good people around and having fun at the track along with sticking to a basic setup to know what works and the car has to feel.

Cugini’s future brother in law NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver Max Zachem helped him throughout the season.

” Max is great and I think he enjoyed the backyard racing team instead of all the big showstopper stuff with the tour. That’s all great but we seem to have a lot more fun when he comes racing with us.  Really brings it down to our basics. He’s having a really good time you know learning the midgets and trying to set up the midgets. He crew chiefed my car all year. He made all the calls on that car all year.  He did a great job and I think it’s going to translate back to his car where I go and help him. He doesn’t have to worry much about his car as much because the stress level on the tour stuff and your you’re own crew chief is very difficult. The fact we can work so well together and we learned to work together working on my cars will definitely pay off when he comes back to run on the tour.” Said Cugini

Cugini races with his sister Meg on the track.  Cugini told 22News that it is awesome to race with her on the track and when they get podium finishes together.

” For a girl who didn’t grow up around the gearhead stuff like I did. I think she is doing pretty well with it.” Said Cugini

Cugini is 100 percent unsure of what his plans are for the 2019 season. He does have a few options of where he wants to go with his program. As of the right now, the plan is to race in the full NEMA Midgets. The plan is also to start pushing to get a modified.

Cugini and his team were honored at the NEMA banquet in Westport, MA.
