SOMERVILLE, MASS. (WPRI) – The Red Sox still have to score another win before they claim the American League East division title, but the banner has already been accidentally unveiled.
It almost didn’t make it to Fenway Park, after taking a quick detour.
Three friends, Louie Iacuzzi, James Amaral and Randy Baldasarri, say they were out for coffee on McGrath Highway in Somerville on Monday morning when they spotted something on the road.
“One person ran it over and hit it a little bit,” Iacuzzi said. “I’m like, ‘Pull over, what is it?'”
Lacuzzi says the banner was wrapped in brown paper, and they waited until they got out of the car to open it. At first the three thought it was jerseys, but when they opened it up, they knew it was something much more than that.
They were stunned to find out it was the American League East division title banner.
A Red Sox spokesperson said they were aware of a banner that fell off a vendor’s delivery truck.
The three friends promised to return the banner to the team as soon as they could.
There’s no superstition for the three Sox fans.”I’m going to give them back the banner, and that’s going to be the good luck charm,” Iacuzzi said.
The team is expected to retrieve the banner back first thing, Wednesday morning.
