First ever Thunderbirds street hockey tournament honors late local fan

The Thunderbirds held their first ever street hockey tournament Saturday morning.

Youth teams across western Massachusetts and Connecticut laced up their roller blades for some fun on the black top.

The teams participated for a small fee with a portion of the money funding the Blaze family in honor of Alex Balis, a Springfield Thunderbird fan who passed away months ago.

Thunderbirds president Nathan Costa told 22News, he’s been trying to make this event a reality for a long time, “doing stuff like this on a Saturday in downtown Springfield, it’s a good idea, our staff has been talking about it for a while and we really had a chance to execute it this year.”

Costa said he hopes to make the street hockey tournament an annual event.
