Florida State offensive coordinator named as UMass head football coach

Sports

UMass has hired Florida State offensive coordinator Walt Bell as their new head football coach.

The 34-year-old Bell has been a fast riser in college coaching, going from a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi to offensive coordinator at two Power Five schools before the age of 35.

UMass has yet to have a winning season since moving to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2012.

UMass parted ways with Mark Whipple in November after back to back 4-8 seasons.

“We’re super excited here,” said Allen Pandiani, associate director of UMass. “Coach Bell brings a tremendous outlook, energy, enthusiasm, really highly regarded at his time spent at North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas State.”

Mark Whipple had coached UMass football for five seasons. UMass athletics will welcome Coach Bell with a press conference on Wednesday.

That conference will be held at UMass at 2 p.m.
