Local teams battle in western Massachusetts basketball championships


Fans cheered on the western Massachusetts high school basketball teams Friday night in their championship games.

The girl’s basketball team from Springfield Central High School played against Chicopee Comprehensive High School at the Curry Hicks Cage in UMass Amherst Friday night.

The boy’s basketball team from Putnam Vocational Technical Academy played against Springfield Central High School. Mayor Domenic Sarno was in attendance of both games.

Sarno told 22News he’s very proud of each and every player on the team and admires the coach’s in the western Massachusett’s high schools.

“Very proud of what these young ladies and young men not only do on the court but off the court,” Sarno said. “They’re scholar-athletes and champions.”

Central’s girl’s team won their third straight western Massachusetts championship Friday night, beating Chicopee Comp. 63-33. 

Putnam won against Central, beating them 51-49.
