The Patriots were back on the field Thursday night for Game 2 of the preseason, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The New England Patriots had a commanding lead as they entered the fourth quarter in their second preseason game. The New England team went on to beat the Eagles 20-37.
The stakes were much lower this time around as the two Super Bowl LII teams have a whole season ahead of them.
For some players though, it’s their chance to prove their worthiness.
“You earn your playing time through practice, and if you can prove that you can be competent enough to be put on the field in games then we’ll put them out there,” Coach Bill Belichick said during a news conference Tuesday. “We’ve had players here that have never played in a game because they couldn’t show that on the practice field. The better you do, the more you earn, the more opportunity you earn. If it doesn’t go as well, then there may not be many more opportunities.”
Tom Brady said he may make his preseason debut Thursday night. Last week against the Washington Redskins, Brian Hoyer and Danny Etling took the snaps.
“I think the plan’s always to play,” Brady told reporters at a news conference Tuesday. “It’s – whether I do or don’t is up to coach but yeah, I certainly plan on being out there.”
Week 2 of the NFL preseason brought the Patriots a Super Bowl rematch. Even though the score from Thursday night’s game doesn’t really matter and the starters who played in that Super Bowl game didn’t play very much.
Fans told 22News the game has more of an importance since the Patriots are playing a team that beat them in the Super Bowl. Even though these teams are playing during the preseason one fan told 22News she’s excited to see a Super Bowl rematch for her first game at Gillette Stadium.
“It was too close it was a shock to all of us that they lost last year,” said Kimberly Edwards. “I’m very excited I’ve never been here and to see them have a rematch, I want the Pats to show the Eagles what we’re made out of.”
Patriots and Eagles fans made the trip to Gillette for Thursday night’s preseason matchup between last year’s top teams in the NFL.
The Patriots will be on the road for their last two preseason games.
They begin the regular season September 9, when they take on the Houston Texans.
