The UMass Men’s Ice Hockey team have won their first-round game of the NCAA Tournament.
A dominating win for the Minutemen. UMass showed why they are one of the top teams in the nation as they powered their way to a 4-0 win against Harvard.
UMass played in their first NCAA tournament since 2007. They’re ranked first in the Northeast region for the tournament and fourth overall in the nation.
Although UMass will be going against some perennial powerhouse programs in this tournament, one UMass student said anything can happen in March.
“You just have to ride the hot hand and this team has shown they have a lot of character and they’ve faced a lot of adversity an they can definitely overcome it,” said Dante Panteleo.
Panteleo said no one would have thought the team would make it this far. He said the Minutemen have been exciting to watch all season.
“It’s been unbelievable it’s been so fun to come a long with the team and ride it with them,” Panteleo added. “We’ve been waiting outside games from 4:00 for a 7:30 game camping out with the students, just so much excitement.”
22News spoke with two fans from Athol who have been season ticket holders for the past 20 seasons. They said they’re proud of how much this program has grown.
“We’ve been season ticket holders for a very long time and this has by far been the best season of all,” said Debbie Kuzmeskas. “It’s been wonderful, exciting, every game win or lose it’s been wonderful.
UMass will now play with winner of Clarkson and Notre Dame Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
A big win for the Minutemen. A big win for western Massachusetts.
The show goes on in March for UMass.
