UMass’ Cale Makar signs with NHL’s Colorado Avalanche

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Cale Makar is leaving UMass to play professional hockey.

According to the NHL, the sophomore has signed a three-year contract to play professional hockey with the Colorado Avalanche.

It was announced Sunday that Makar will join the team immediately for its Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Calgary Flames. 

The defenseman was named as the winner of the 2019 Hobey Baker Award Friday, which is presented the best player in college hockey. He was the first player in UMass history to win the award.

Makar was chosen by Colorado in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft.

UMass bid Makar farewell Sunday with a video tribute on Twitter, thanking the defenseman while Colorado welcomed him with its own Twitter post.
