BUFFALO (WWLP) – The Cinderella season for the UMass Minutemen has reached the finale as the team hopes to bring back a national championship trophy back to western Mass. Saturday night.

Thousands of fans from western Massachusetts and across the nation have been in Buffalo, New York all weekend long supporting the Minutemen. From pre-game parties and the Frozen Fest, fans have been enjoying the action on and off the ice.

Brett Boeing, father of UMass hockey player, Jeff Boeing told 22News, “It’s something special when he was little we never thought something like this was going to happen. It’s a bucket list thing really special to be here.”

Local fan Dan Comerdy said, “It’s been magic it really has been, a real height we got a chance to go through the line meet all the players and get autographs and it’s really evident the coach has recruited high caliber guys.”

The Minutemen will be facing off against Minnesota Duluth Saturday night. Despite Minnesota being the reigning champions, fans think UMass has what it takes to come out on top.

An overtime win vs. Denver during the semifinal round of the Frozen Four secured UMass’ spot in the national championship. It’s the first time in program history that the team has made it this far.

Natalie Gaines of East Longmeadow told 22News the excitement from the team’s success has been overwhelming. “The other night’s game was unreal. The last goal was the hardest celebration we’ve ever done, celebrating and crying.”

UMass Defenseman Cale Makar was also awarded the 2019 Hobey Baker Award Friday night. The award recognizes the best player in collegiate hockey.

Cale and the rest of The Minutemen hope to cap off the weekend with a victory and hope to come back to western Massachusetts with a championship trophy.
