UMass men’s hockey players, fans ready for national championship


UMass men’s hockey team is less than 24 hours away from playing in their first national championship.

It’s been a season of firsts for the UMass men’s hockey team. A first Hockey East Regular Season Title, the first season with 30 wins and now the most important of them all, a first national championship.

“It’s unbelievable and again I’m excited these kids get this experience, said Head Coach Greg Carvel. “Hopefully we pull out another win and we’ll be teammates together in that regard.”

Freshman Defenseman Marc Del Gaizo said he appreciates the fan support, “The whole school is behind us and family and friends so this is something really special.”

One local fan told 22News, “We’ve been season ticket holders for UMass for a long time and we’ve waited for this team to come along. This coaching staff to come along the community is behind the team and we’re looking forward to the game tomorrow.”

“I’ve been watching the game since I was two my dad and his buddy were one of the guys who brought hockey back, hockey fan Alex Sullivan added. “Hope we get the national championship and bring it to Amherst.”

ESPN Hockey Analyst John Buccigross told 22News, “I do think UMass is going to win. I said that before the tournament and they have what it takes to finish the job.”
